What are You Worth?

What are You Worth? Well, it looks like we are worth quite a lot, really!. To the government we are seriously valuable...what we are able to contribute and add value, makes us very valuable to our country and to each other. We are also constantly being encouraged to donate our organs, on our passing. On the black market, a donated heart can be worth anything from $170,000 to $394,000. Of course, the buying and selling of human organs is illegal, as it should be.

You may have heard that the Tik Tok Awards has just been held at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney. Eight thousand attended the Award Ceremony, which is in its third year. There are no actual 'famous' people or celebrities attending. Those who attended have been described as 'micro-celebrities'. Every 'micro-celebrity' is a niche internet content creator, identifiable only for the video content they went viral for. This year there were 14 categories ranging from food, fashion, entertainment and education. It was a night where the lines between marketing and content are blurred and value is ascribed according to one's subscribers or followers.

Reading about this award ceremony, got me thinking about the worth of a person. Is a person worth only the number of subscribers or followers of the content they create on YouTube? Intrinsically and historically we have all known that humans have value. As Christians, we know this value is God-given. Tragically, our world is becoming more accepting of human beings being discarded, when they are economically or socially irrelevant, old, sick, infant or perceived as a nuisance. We see this very disturbing trend happening all across the world.

God has made us in His image. He loves us so much that He stepped into the human story in the person of His Son, Jesus. Jesus lived on earth for 33 years and then was crucified (one of the worst and most torturous deaths known to man). He was beaten and bruised and eventually paid the ultimate price for our sin, that we were unable or capable of paying. Our value to God is inestimable (too great to calculate). Read The Gospel of John 3:16 to see how much you mean to Him.
