Catherine Genovese, a 28 year old bar manager was walking home from work in the early hours of March 13th, 1964 in Queens (USA). She was attacked and stabbed in multiple assaults that took place over 35 minutes. Thirty eight (38) people witnessed the attacks but did nothing to help, including phoning the police. This situation is quite infamous and has been studied for many years. The case became a touchstone for the ' Bystander Effect' and 'Genovese Syndrome'. It was found in subsequent investigations that the extent of public apathy was exaggerated and many who witnessed the situation were not fully aware of how serious it was. This incident led to the first Neighbourhood Watch Program.
